The Universal Stories of the Mother

The other day a group of women who had never met came together in circle. Physically they were all over the world, spanning several continents. From the depths of winter in Ireland to the height of summer in the central Australian desert.

None of them had ever sat in circle with us, none of them had experienced of a circle over vast distances using the telephone…. and yet they all experienced it. Many commented on it, and there were 2 main things that we heard (and so often hear). 1) how amazing it was, that space that we can create together despite the physical distance and 2) How surprising it was to hear themselves echoed in all the other woman's voices and the snippets of their lives that they shared.

“What you said, that could have been me speaking.”

There is a thread of common story that runs through the experience of motherhood. That is present not only amongst the mothers raising their children now, but stories that have been present in mothers since the dawn of time.

These are the universal stories of the mother.

The depth of love, the dark nights of the soul, the joy , the frustration, the not good enough, not ready, the fear they are screwing their children up, the desire to do their best by their children. The mourning at the loss of temper, the pondering of what lies ahead, the desperation that comes with no sleep, the ability to find yet again one more level of patience or perseverance .

You are not alone.

You share these universal stories. I promise you, your story will be heard and felt and in some even experienced by another mother, somewhere in the world.

You are part of an eternal linage of mothers, those who have gone before you for eons, if you reach out you can feel them behind you, holding you. And the mothers that will come before you, drawing comfort and solidarity for the shared experience with you. From the moment you become pregnant you become in some way a part of that linage and a part of that shared story.

There is so much power in coming together as women and not only supporting each other (which is hugely powerful) but also in really hearing and seeing the universal stories of the mother that exist within all of us.

In circle one of the things that we teach in our very first experiences of being together in a space of sharing is that of the concept of medicine.

Essentially this means asking yourself - What is there within you that is YOUR medicine, your inner message, your deeper wisdom for YOURSELF - within another woman's share and coaching?

It is always there, it might be a tangent, it might spark a memory, it might be a clear an obvious connection, but it will be there.

The magic of circle and the concept of medicine draws on the universal stories of the mother weaving a clear thread through any given circle in the moment allowing each woman to gain not only the clarity she seeks and her own wisdom on what she brings to share in circle ,but also all the extra depth of wisdom and clarity that comes as she hears the universal stories of the mother, fragments of herself in all the other shares.

And often there is great comfort and solidarity in knowing , how you feel - you are not alone.
